What is Chinese Medicine Culture? Do you know? 中醫藥文化是什麼？同學認識嗎？ This November, we and the Chinese medicine practitioners held school visits in three primary schools, Li Sing Primary School, Chai Wan Kok Catholic Primary School and Oblate Primary School. In the briefing sessions, Chinese medicine practitioners briefed the students about the differences between Western and Chinese medicine, the magic of Chinese medicinal herbs and treatment. After the briefing sessions, the Chinese medicine practitioners played interactive games with the students who participated with enthusiasm. We wish all a healthy New Year and look forward to seeing students in their schools soon. 這一年在校上課的日子變得罕有，令校訪的安排同時變得障礙重重。 11月，我們和醫師的校訪活動先後在李陞小學、柴灣角天主教小學和獻主會小學進行。 醫師先向同學簡介中西醫不同的原理，再說神農的二三事；買西瓜也可以「望聞問切」；治療的方式不只吃藥和針灸；各式的藥材展視也引來同學不少好奇；嘗試按壓手上合谷穴，原來可治療簡單痛症。 講座後進行互動遊戲。「學中文．學健康」，透過古字、圖像，如「疒」、「青」，簡單說明文字含意，了解生活、健康和文化。「學生活．學健康」，將飲食、睡眠、運動、起居的情況與天氣、季節、環境、時間配對，沒有絕對的對錯，但卻從中明白生活習慣對健康的影響。 在短短的時間中，同學對中醫藥文化由陌生到積極地參與，氣氛非常熾熱。 很感謝學校和老師全程的配合，活動後的問卷調查中，得到十分正面的回應，其中獻主會小學的老師更傳來同學們的活動感想，令我們更具體瞭解他們的想法。我們會不斷檢視活動內容，讓活動更流暢充實，更易抓緊同學的專注，更有效傳播中醫藥文化的知識。 疫情反覆，12月同學們都只能在家上課，校訪活動亦被迫暫停。新一年新開始，希望大家身體健康，我們可以再到學校與同學們共聚。 #中醫藥文化兒童教育繪本圖書計劃 #PictureBooksOnChineseMedicineCulture #校訪活動 #SchoolVisit #香港 #HongKong Picture Books News Back | Next

It is all printed! Yet, it is just a beginning! 印好了！才是接觸的開始！ The printing of two picture books is at last done. Now it becomes the physical things in hands. The feelings are so different to the books were once computer graphics. We will be sending the books to the schools and the kindergartens. We are truly curious about the fellow pupils’ feedback. We are preparing school visits. Beyond healing and medicine – Interviewing with Dennis Au 醫藥以外 —— 問。訪歐卓榮 Jumping out of classroom and consultation room, Dennis reaches the new generation in a brand new way. 跳出教室、診症室，以新方式接觸未來的一族。 Interview Interview in English translation Q1. Have you read picture books? Have you thought of getting children to know Chinese medicinal culture through picture books? I didn’t have a chance to read picture books when I was a kid, so I couldn’t name any book I like, not to mention making use such unfamiliar media. Since I knew Kung Chin Chin, I have paid more attention in picture books, and I realised kids can learn a lot from it. Q2. What kids are up to? Is it difficult to promote Chinese medicinal culture? They like pictures more than words, so they can easily learn new things from colourful and fun picture books. I had tried to talk to kids about Chinese medicine, but they couldn’t concentrate even for a while. So we need a new way and more interaction to catch their attention, and then teach them step by step. Q3. You haven been taking part in young people’s activities, but now you’re getting along with kids. Any difference between the two? Completely different. We can directly educate young people. Kids don’t have any chance to know Chinese medicine apart from seeing a practitioner. But with schools’ and parents’ influence, kids can learn about it better. Q4. What do you think about the herbalist’s image in kids’ mind? When kids first got to know me, they just thought I was not quite different from a Western doctor, like Dr Brown Bear in Peppa Pig (laughs). But gradually, they found some difference, like me holding their hands, asking them to show their tongues. These aroused their curiosity. They would ask why. This inspired them to think about the difference between Chinese and Western medicine. Q5. How did you feel when you worked with Kung Chin Chin for the first time? It’s quite thrilling and inspiring. I can’t imagine those dull words can presented with interesting drawings. When it started, we both agreed the contents need to be plain and simple, bringing Chinese medicinal culture into everyday life. When the concept of the books are in formation, we definitely expected kids will like it. Q6. Did the books made your wish come true? Yes, but more than that. I was really happy. I truly appreciate the drawing delicacy, the abundant colours and the rich wit in Kung Chin Chin’s work. When the work was done, it’s just the same as what we had imagined in our discussion. Q7. Are you confident in the picture books’ impact? My nephews read the books. They were quite interested, asking this and that, and wanted to know more. I think the books can arouse children to read. If their parents guide them to read, they can understand more easily. Children and parents will be getting closer as well. Q8. What would you expect when the books are published? I would expect more picture books on Chinese culture and Chinese medicinal culture will be published. It can be promoted to other Chinese places, like Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia… I’d also expect more language versions can be published. Q9. At last, was this co-working fun? From unfamiliar to understanding – Interviewing with Kung Chin Chin 從陌生到理解 —— 問。訪工千芊 Through the artist’s picture books, we see the world of Chinese medicine. And yet, we have different views. What about Kung Chin Chin? Let’s talk to our artist. 我們透過繪本師的圖畫去看中醫藥的世界，理解各有不同。 工千芊的又如何？在圖畫以外認識多點我們的插畫師吧！ Q1. Why did you take part in Picture Books on Traditional Chinese Medicine Project? I’m quite for promoting traditional Chinese medicinal culture with a simple, everyday-like way. Picture book is absolutely such a think-out-of-the-box way. It’s my honour to be invited to take part in this Project. I was quite happy about it. Q2. Is Chinese medicine culture unfamiliar to you? When I was a kid, whenever I was sick, my mom took me to a Western medical clinic. I was cured by some injection and pill, then got well speedily, so I didn’t have much chance to know Chinese medicine. When I grew up, I had been suffering from a pain disease. I tried traditional Chinese medical treatment, and got healed slowly. Now I don’t find Chinese medicine unfamiliar anymore. Q3. How did you feel when you first read the manuscript? Word by word, Heave, Earth, Man, Healing explores the deep meaning behinds the Chinese words. Using Rainie and her parents as story characters, Where is Our Medicine? brings out relationship between everyday life and Nature. The story is romantic and sweet. We can feel love flowing out from the poetic words. Q4. Have you ever thought how children get to know Chinese medicinal culture? I think the easiest way is to see a Chinese medicine practitioner (CMP). Chinese medicine looked like very strange and odd to me when I was a kid. Q5. Did you feel it refreshing when you worked with the CMPs for the first time? Haha, completely different from the CMPs I knew, these CMPs I worked with were young, hip and yet professional. I learnt a lot from them. Q6. What do you think about the CMP’s image in children’s mind? Before the picture books were born, the image was supposedly not quite different from what I had imagined when I was a kid: old, white hair, serious look and so on. But after the books were born, I believe it would be much more easier for children to know and accept CMPs. Q7. Any challenge in this co-working? Was it difficult to present Chinese medicine culture with drawing? The biggest challenge was picture books started with fundamentals. It was really difficult to present relationship between healing and medicine with merely Nature and seasons illustrated in the drawings. It was even more challenging to make the books children-friendly. Q8. What do you expect children to learn from the picture books? I hope through abstract and articulate presentation, parents and their children can together explore the meaning behind the colourful and fantastic pictures. I also hope, of course, the message of protecting and treasuring the environment can be delivered to children. It is the book says, “Love Nature, for Nature loves you.” Q9. What do you expect this Project to achieve? I’d expect children can have preliminary understanding of Chinese medicine culture. I’d also expect the books can access to different places of the world, so that more children can know and benefit from Chinese medicine culture. Q10. Was the co-working fun? Yes, of course. It was really a great opportunity to work with people who had like minds and same goals. Q1. 為何會想參與 “中醫藥健康文化教育繪本” 計劃？ 我十分贊同以簡單、生活化方式宣揚中醫藥文化理念，而繪本絕對是破格的、擺脫固有的方式。難得有幸能獲邀參與這個計劃，很開心。 Q2. 中醫藥文化對你來說陌生嗎？ 小時候生病，都是媽媽帶我到西醫診所，一粒藥、一支針，很快見效，所以沒什麼機會接觸中醫；長大後，因為痛症困擾，嘗試了中醫療法，慢慢的痊癒了。現在對中醫藥再不陌生。 Q3. 初次接到文稿時有什麼感受？ 《天、地、人、醫》用一個個單字，由淺入深，追索背後深遠的意思。其中配合天地萬物的元素，令題材、圖畫更豐富。《我們的藥在哪裡？》是以Rainie與父母間相處，帶出日常生活與大自然關係，從四季、植物與人認識天地循環。故事浪漫又溫馨，從詩般的文字間，滲出濃濃的愛。 Q4. 你有想過小朋友可以從什麼途徑認識中醫藥文化？ 我想最容易認識到中醫藥文化，應該是要看醫生的時候，所以像我小時候一樣，會覺得中醫很陌生、用的藥材又奇怪等等。 Q5. 第一次與中醫師合作感覺新鮮嗎？ 哈哈，跟我認識的中醫師完全不一樣，年青、新潮、又專業，談及中醫藥學術上的知識，已經可以獲益良多。 Q6. 你覺得中醫師在小朋友心目中有何形象？ 在繪本還沒有出現，小朋友心目中的中醫師與我小時候想像應分別不大，如年紀大、頭髮斑白、樣子嚴肅等等；不過當今次繪本誕生後，我相信，小朋友要認識和接受中醫師絕對比當年的我容易得多。 Q7. 關於這次合作，有挑戰性嗎？覺得用圖畫去表達中醫藥文化困難嗎？ 當中最大的挑戰，是繪本內容是從根本出發，試想想沒有中醫治病、吃中藥等的內容為前提，純以圖畫中大自然、四季節氣去表達醫與藥的意思和關係，還要讓小朋友覺得親切易明，多不容易。 Q8. 你希望小朋友透過繪本學懂什麼？ 能夠透過抽象而細膩的表達，讓父母一起發掘繽紛奇異畫面背後的意義是非常重要。當然亦希望向小朋友帶出要好好保護、珍惜大自然的信息。就如繪本中說「要愛大自然，因為大自然愛你。」 Q9. 對於繪本計劃可有什麼期望？ 小朋友從中能初步認識和感受中醫藥文化當然是最重要。我也希望可以將這繪本帶到世界不同地方，讓更多小朋友認識、受惠於中醫藥文化。 Q10. 過程愉快嗎？ 怎可能不愉快？能與一群理念相近、目標一致的人合作，實在難得。 COPYRIGHT© kungchinchin. Black and white drawings gradually into Color 黑白的畫稿漸漸變成彩色 Another week passed, let me show the progress of two picture books. The black and white drafts with rich details have made the picture book very attractive. Then I saw the color mood board of picture books; I felt the illustrator’s intention and care. The black and white drafts were painted color bit by bit, slowly seeing the space, and gradually feeling the atmosphere. One by one illustration is born. It‘s like starting to plant a small potted plant, watering it every day, watching it change every day, and looking forward to the fruitful day. P.S. The picture has interesting details, after reading the text, you can explore it carefully. 一星期又過去，來交代一下兩冊繪本的進度。 有著豐富細節的黑白稿已讓繪本很吸引，再看到色調概念稿時就感到插畫師的用心，然後黑白稿一點一點的塗上色彩，慢慢的看到空間，漸漸的感受氣氛，插畫就一幅幅的誕生。現在就像剛開始栽種小盆栽，每天澆點水，每天看著它變化，期待結果的一天。 P.S. 畫面有著趣味的細節，讀完內文後，還可仔細的發掘。 COPYRIGHT© kungchinchin. The first sketches are increasing the expectation of picture book 令人期待繪本完成品的初稿 The project of picture books has been underway for a few weeks. We started with choosing suitable themes and contents for the picture book, and our consultants are reviewing the information for us between works. Through countless communication and choices with our illustrator, we hope the spirit of Chinese Medicine Culture can be best displayed with drawing. It will take a while to become a printed matter. But when we saw the first draft, we wanted to share it with everyone. 計劃已開展了幾星期，為繪本選擇合適題材、製訂內容，顧問醫師百忙裡為我們審視資料。跟插畫師透過無數溝通和抉擇，希望將中醫藥文化的精神用圖像作最大的展現。 距離成為印刷品還要一段時間，但看到初稿時就已經很想跟大家分享一下。 COPYRIGHT© kungchinchin. Our picture books guide children to understand Chinese Medicinal culture and healthy lifestyle. 我們的繪本專為學童認識中醫藥文化及健康生活而編繪， 推廣從小認識中醫藥的精神文化底蘊。 Illustrator Kung creates a lovely character Rainie. Rainie has silver grey hair. The weather keeps changing, so she wears a red raincoat and red rain boots. She is so fortunate that her cute animal friends are around even in stormy weather. There will be rainbow after the rain! She believes this and looks forwards to it. Children’s Picture Books Projects on Chinese Medicine Culture is kicked off 「中醫藥文化兒童教育繪本圖書計劃」正式展開 Financed by Chinese Medicine Development Fund, CCCF’s Children’s Picture Books Project on Chinese Medicinal Culture kicks off. Let’s introduce our two partners of the project. 中華文化傳播基金的「中醫藥文化兒童教育繪本圖書計劃」得到中醫藥發展基金的資助正式展開，由繪本內容、顧問至插畫師都已就位，熱切期待合作的成品。現在來認識一下伙伴們。 Founded in 2009, Chinese Medicine for All (CMA) is a charitable Chinese medicine organisation. CMA sends fresh Chinese medicine graduates to provide simple, affordable, and effective mobile consultation and education services to poor people across Asia. 我們的中醫團體合作伙伴－全仁中醫，是由香港一群青年中醫在2009年組成，並於2011年正式註冊為非牟利團體 (慈善稅務登記號：91/11434)，旨在以簡、便、效、廉的中醫藥，幫助和教導貧困地區的人民防治疾病。 他們派出優秀並剛畢業的中醫，到貧困地區設立中醫藥流動診所。並於當地開設流動健康教室，教導養生防病的知識；培訓當地醫療工作者為鄰里服務。他們也構結海外合作伙伴，為菲律賓及尼泊爾災民、泰緬邊境難民開展醫療人道工作。 PHOTO © Chinese Medicine for All A design and fine art graduate, illustrator Kungchinchin runs a design firm. She once lectured Illustration and Comics at CUSCS, CUHK. Her works are often showcased in local and overseas exhibitions.
